Il-Ḥrûf (Alphabet)

The Elyssa Alphabet is the alphabet created by The TUNI1259 Institute to write the Tunisian language. It is inspired from the Maltese alphabet and based on the Berber Latin alphabet. The Elyssa Alphabet includes, besides the letters of the Latin alphabet, diacriticized letters that enrich it in order to express as correctly as possible the phonemes, sounds and intonations of the Tunisian language.

The Elyssa Alphabet consists of 40 graphemes broken down as follows:

  • 26 letters
    • 5 vowels: a, e, i, o, u
    • 21 consonnants: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z
  • 6 consonants borrowed from the Berber Latin alphabet: ḍ, ɛ, ɣ, ḥ, ṣ, ṭ
  • 8 new letters added by the TUNI1259 Institute:
    • 5 long vowels: â, ê, î, ô, û
    • 3 consonants: `, đ, ŧ
